013 St. Patrick's Boys NS sports 1961

At the splendidly equipped St. Patrick’s GAA grounds, the local St. Patrick’s School held its annual sports day on Sunday, June 17, 1961. Parents, parishioners and past pupils of the school attended in record numbers and a very varied programme of athletic and novelty events was expeditiously carried through under sunny skies.
There were over 200 eager competitors ranging from tiny tots and senior infants to the contenders for the all-round cup from the sixth standard. The crowd responded to the exciting finishes in many of the track events but the highlight of the evening was the jumping in both the senior and intermediate competitions. “Here, a high standard of coaching was evident and very creditable performances were witnessed,” the Limerick Leader of Saturday, June 24, stated. Before the conclusion of the programme, Very Rev.
J. Cowper, PP, DD, Manager of the School, paid tribute to the teaching staff for having organised so efficiently this annual parish festival. He was, he said, delighted that the parents of the children had shown their appreciation of that work by attending in such numbers and by donating such an array of valuable prizes. The all-round cup and medal (u-14) was won by Matthew Kennedy after a keen struggle with J. O’Dwyer and
J. Delaney. Kennedy’s younger brother, Sean, had a runaway victory for the junior all-round cup. Should he persevere in the athletic arena a bright future is predicted for this boy, the Limerick Leader said at the time.

Winners of the major events were:
50 yds. (u-7), 1, T. Laffan; 2, D. Counihan.
60 yds. (u-8), 1, F. O’Brien; 2, P. McNamara.
80 yds. (u-9), 1, T. McInerney; 2, J. Markham.
100 yds. (u-10), 1, D. Cross; 2, D. Bray.
100 yds. (u-11), 1, P. Tuite; 2, G. Danaher.
100 yds. (u-12), 1. S. Kennedy; 2, N. Markham.
100 yds. (u-13), 1, M. Kennedy; 2, J. Doyle.
100 yds. (u-15), 1, S. Madden; 2, J. O’Dwyer.
220 yds. (u-12), 1, S. Kennedy; 2, P. Hennessy.
220 yds. (u-15), 1, J. O’Dwyer; 2, M. Kenned
